All the pictures on this page were taken during the last few weeks of
locomotive hauled Cardiff to Portsmouth trains. In this picture, 33 029 is seen
heading through Freshford station with a southbound train on 20 Febuary 1988.
Taken later the same day, 33 211 is seen at Avoncliff with a Portsmouth train.
This picture shows 33 049 passing non-stop through the tiny station at Avoncliff on 20 Febuary 1988.
Trains generally stop here only by request.
33 106 is seen passing Bradford Junction with a Cardiff to Portsmouth train on Saturday
14 May 1988. This was the last weekend of roughly hourly loco-hauled trains on this route with
class 155 sprinters taking over on the following Monday morning. This picture was taken from the
towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal which passes over the railway at this point. Bradford Junction is now
signalled from Westbury Power Box.
At the tiny station of Dilton Marsh, just south of Westbury, an unidentified
class 33 is seen passing with a southbound train on 14 May 1988. Next stop will be Warminster.
In the evening of 14 May, 33 011 heads a northbound train away from Westbury and is seen passing Hawkeridge Junction.
The tracks to the left form a triangle with the Berks and Hants line and are often used by divirted Bristol to London trains
as well as coal trains to the nearby cement works.
