Coombe Junction

After leaving Liskeard station, trains for the Looe branch descend about two miles at around 1 in 40 before arriving at Coombe Junction. Trains must reverse here before continuing their journey to Looe. The junction itself is situated just out of sight in the distance. However, trains for Moorswater continue straight-on passed the tiny platform at Coombe, which can be seen in this picture, taken on 14 May 1990. Light engine 37 675 has just made the descent from Liskeard, and is about to enter the short freight-only section to the Moorswater clay dries. click here to enlarge.

About 30 minutes later, 37 675 is seen just after collecting its' train of CDA clay hoppers from Moorswater. The clay works is situated just beyond the 150ft viaduct which carries the main line to Penzance. click here to enlarge.

This picture was taken from the platform at Coombe and shows the same train waiting for permission to leave the short Moorswater section. An HST is passing over the viaduct in the background. The signal box at Coombe Junction was closed in May 1981 and replaced by two ground frames which control entry into the Moorswater and Looe sections. click here to enlarge.

The line to Looe is very scenic. After reversing at Coombe Junction, this class 108 DMU is seen heading along side the East Looe River on 20 september 1989. click here to enlarge.
