Newport area
A view of Llanwern steelworks with two class 37's in view.
Picture taken 23 April 1990.
Later the same afternoon, an empty iron ore train hauled by 37 718 and 37712 seen passing a class 108
DMU at Gaer Junction, Newport.
This location is Park Junction, on the line from Newport to Ebbw Vale. The branch to Machen quarry diverges from here. On an unrecorded date
in 1996, 60 036 passes with a train for the steelworks at Ebbw Vale, seventeen miles away. In the distance, the distinctive shape of the
transporter bridge at Newport can be seen.
47 637 is seen arriving at Newport station on 9 August 1986. The train is a Cardiff to Paddington service formed enterly of first class
stock as a replacement for an HST set.
45 144 is seen arriving at Newport station on 9 August 1986. I seem to recall that this was a Portsmouth train and if
this was the case, there would be a loco change at Bristol.
Llanwern steelworks dominates the skyline as 37 254 heads towards East Usk yard with a westbound freight on 23 April 1990.
The Bishton Flyover is situated five miles east of Newport and carries the up relief line over the fast lines. On 23 April 1990,
an unidentified class 37 is seen heading towards Severn Tunnel with a train of bogie bolster wagons.
33 203 is pictured on 10 August 1987 between Newport and Severn Tunnel. The train is one of the regular Cardiff to Portsmouth
workings which were usually hauled by class 33's at this time. In the far distance, a class 37 is approaching on the up relief line.
On the same day afternoon, and from the same vantage point, 37 174 is seen heading eastwards towards Severn Tunnel Junction
with a train of VEA wagons.
37 147 at Severn Tunnel Junction, about 10 miles to the east of Newport, on 10 August 1987 when there was still a busy freight yard
there, together with a large stabling point. I think the loaded ballast train would
probably have come from Tidenham, a nearby quarry which was served by a short branch from Chepstow.
