Paignton

The line beyond Paignton, to Kingswear, was sold in the early 1970's and became a steam railway. Since then, Paignton has been the BR terminus of the branch from Aller Junction, near Newton Abbot. In this picture, 50 014 is seen arriving at its destination on 4 August 1987. click here to enlarge.

After arriving at Paignton, 50 014 uncoupled from its train and is seen here before running-round and departing with a northbound service. click here to enlarge.

Beyond the station at Paignton, BR retained the nearby Goodrington carriage sidings. On 4 August 1987, 33 108 is seen entering Paignton with a short train of empty stock from Goodrington. At the time, many of the local trains from Paignton to Newton Abbot or Exeter were loco-hauled. Paignton had two signal boxes as there are level-crossings at both ends of the station. The roof of the South box can be seen above the middle carriage. The track on the far left of the picture belongs to the Torbay Steam Railway. click here to enlarge.

During summer months, trains passing over the level-crossing at Paignton always attract a crowd of onlookers. In this picture, 33 108 is the centre of attention as it departs with a local sevice to Exeter on 4 August 1987. click here to enlarge.

47 588 is seen on the level crossing at Paignton on 26 July 1986. This picture shows the scissors crossover and bracket semaphore signal. The signal box can just be glimpsed on the far left. This end of the station was resignalled in early 1988 although the other end of the station retained its semaphores for a further year or so. click here to enlarge.
