Redmire Branch

Until December 1992, there was a daily train of limestone from Redmire to Redcar. The quarry at Redmire was situated at the end of a twenty-two mile freight-only branch from Northallerton and when it was announced that the traffic was to cease, the future of the line looked bleak. In this first picture, 60 031 is seen near the village of Newton-le-Willows with an empty train, bound for the quarry on 20 November 1992. click here to enlarge.

This picture shows 60 031 shunting after arrival at Redmire quarry. The use of a brake van on these trains enabled the guard to close several sets of crossing gates along the branch. click here to enlarge.

60 031 is seen approaching the level crossing and signal box at Bedale whilst working a loaded train towards Northallerton. 20 November 1992. click here to enlarge.

This picture was taken the previous day and shows 60 052 approaching Bedale with a loaded train from Redmire. click here to enlarge.

'The Wensleydale Explorer' was one of several railtours which visited the line soon after the stone traffic had ceased. On 28 December 1992, 47 819 is seen at Redmire quarry whilst railtour participants take pictures. I travelled on this train from Bristol Parkway. The line is now preserved as The Wensleydale Railway. click here to enlarge.
