West Highland Line
The pictures on this page were all taken during my first visit to Scotland in August 1988,
using the 'Freedom of Scotland' railrover ticket. In this view, taken in the evening of 7 August,
37 409 is seen departing from Oban. On the left of the picture is a Caledonian MacBrayne
ferry which serves various islands including Mull. The disused signal box is in the left foreground.
After staying overnight in Oban, this picture was taken early the following morning and shows the same engine waiting
to depart with the first train of the day to Glasgow. I caught this train to Crianlarich. The train had been stabled overnight
in the station. Another class 37, no 37 425 had also spent that night stabled at Oban and was being used on an freight traffic.
This picture was taken about lunchtime at Crianlarich and shows 37 411 approaching with a train for Oban.
This is another view taken on the same day at Crianlarich. 37 408 is seen arriving from Glasgow with a train for Fort
William. After taking this picture I dashed back over to the platform to get on it. In the background, on the other
side of the island platform, 37 425 is passing in the opposite direction with an freight train from oban.
This picture shows 37 401 approaching Mallaig with a train from Fort William on 9 August 1988.
This picture was taken from the same train as it returned from Mallaig to Fort William. 37 401 is seen
crossing Glenfinnan viaduct
on 9 August 1988.
